One of my favourite people, a Brit (I know, that’s your shocked face), has a gorgeous wee boy for whom she has created a stunning, modern, masculine (all in grays) nursery. This is a woman who has chintz in her veins – but is Philippe Starck in practice (she lives with two men. One is a Scorpio. They invented “minimalist”.) Well I think that Mr Starck would approve of the above chair. Its modern’ish, but classic. Gran might not understand it – but the Bergere lines and faithful Jack would get her past the French sack cloth and “odd colours, duck”. It would work well in a toddles room – as well as his rooms at Oxford. Which is, entirely, the point of everything.

(Why is it “green”? The materials and stuffing meet all EU standards.)

God Save the Queen!

This newly minted design graduate, Hannah, (for whom I see an ever so bright future), was inspired by Wildes “The Selfish Giant”, in making this fantabuloso chair.

I hate that I am not creative when I see little pieces of perfection like this. What a wonderful focal point for any nursery. If I were rich, I’d contact this girl and finance her creation of an entire line of organic children’s chairs inspired by classic poems and tales. Oh, think of how each chair could come with various arm covers and pillows to tell a story….

One day….

Every nursery needs a chair or rocker. So, rather than run out and buy a chair for ours, I re-upholstered my beloved grandmothers chair, (well, I didn’t exactly, a very nice man named Gumer at Windy City Upholstery in Chicago did), which was in her house forever, and her own mothers before her. When I had the chair redone, I requested organic, unbleached feathers and wool be used, rather than toxic foam, as this will be the chair that my son and I spend a great deal of time together in.

I miss my grandmother most terribly, but I know that there is no safer place for her “grandbaby”, than her chair.

Lesson #6: It’s so much more meaningful, when you can, to recycle something that has a bit of soul, than buy it new. It also saves you green, while being green.
